Skydiving. It is a hobby loved by adrenaline seekers - and one which for many years could be partaken at Ipswich Airport.
UK Parachuting, then known as Ipswich Parachute Centre, ran weekly jumps from the airport site on Nacton Road, where people could be taught how to jump correctly and how to pack away the parachute afterwards.
The airport also ran competitions with entrants keen to be crowned Suffolk’s best skydiver.
The airport closed in 1997 to make way for the Ravenswood housing development, despite a ten-year fight to keep it open by campaigners. UK Parachuting is now based at Beccles Airfield, Ellough.
