On Monday, April 29 the inaugural Britain's Best Cakes awards were held at the UK Food and Drink Show in Birmingham.

East Anglian based bakery Two Magpies took home the top prize for its salted caramel and almond brownie.

Little Barn Cakes, based in Stoke-by-Nayland, secured the award for best occasion cake for its garden party cake.

Owner Debbie Locke left at 5am on the day of the awards to make it to the competition but was delayed when her car got a flat tyre.

There were about 120 cakes entered from across the UK in the event.

"I was very overwhelmed and ecstatic when they said I won," said Ms Locke.

"I had made the cake before for a wedding. It was a cherry and almond cake and I was ecstatic that it was professionally judged on how it looked and how it tasted.

"For my cake to be named the best in Britain is just amazing."
