The leader of an education group with several sites in the region has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant for Suffolk.

Dr Nikos Savvas, CEO of Eastern Education Group, which includes West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds, has been given the prestigious accolade.

The Lieutenancy of Suffolk - like other county lieutenancies in the United Kingdom - serves several ceremonial, civic and community roles.

Dr Savvas will work with Lady Clare, Countess of Euston, and her team by bridging the gap between the monarch and the local community, promoting the interests and welfare of people living in the county.

Dr Savvas said: “It is an absolute honour to be recognised and given this role.

"Our vision at Eastern Education Group is to ensure that in an ever-changing world, we deliver a world-class, inspirational, life-long learning journey that drives prosperity for all in our communities.

"I will endeavour to use this privilege for the good of all in the eastern region, flying the flag for education, as we at EEG continue to transform education.

"I look forward to working with community organisations, local businesses and enterprises, strengthening our bonds with the communities and inspiring our young people to take an active role in their communities."

Dr Savvas joined West Suffolk College in 2013 and under his leadership the Eastern Education Group has grown to include One Sixth Form in Ipswich and Abbeygate Sixth Form College in Bury St Edmunds, both rated Outstanding by Ofsted.
