A Suffolk parish council is writing to gas firm Cadent to ask that gas mains are not moved in a bid to stave off a 13-week road closure which has sparked traffic chaos fears in a village.

Judi Hallett, clerk of Ufford Parish Council, said a letter would be sent asking that the mains remain in situ behind farmland, believing that such an outcome would render the closure of the village High Street unnecessary.

In April, the EADT revealed that the road was set to close for a three month period from May to August to enable ageing pipes under the surface to be replaced.

However, in May the proposed works were postponed amid uproar about the potential disruption, particularly for businesses in the High Street, such as The Crown pub.

Landlady Polly Durrant warned her 18th century hostelry 'may not survive' the impact of the closure on trade, especially if tourists and visitors chose to visit a more easily accessible pub after finding the High Street blocked off.

The pub also relied on walk-ins and passers-by, she said.

Since then, the firm has said it is 'continuing to plan these necessary works'.

Judi said Cadent was proposing to move the gas main to the High Street, which already has gas pipes running underneath which are connected to the mains.

She added: "The work was to move it under the High Street, but they should leave it in its position on agricultural land."

A Cadent spokesperson said the letter had not arrived and until it had, the firm would not be able to comment.
