Quakers across Britain are gearing up to celebrate the 400th birthday of their early leader, George Fox.

Friends are planning a grand birthday bash at Sudbury Meeting House in Suffolk on Saturday, July 13.

The fun-filled event will run from 1pm to 5pm and admission is free.

While Fox holds a significant place in Quaker history, the celebration is about more than just his fascinating life.

The festivities will round off with serving of delectable Strawberry Cream Teas.

Quaker Elder Robert Parkes voiced his take on Quakerism and the importance of celebrating their journey.

He said: “Quakerism has never been about one person.

"As well as George Fox, there were many others, such as Margaret Fell who gave birth to a Society of Friends which started four hundred years ago.

"Their teaching of peace and integrity is still fundamental to Quakers today, and the music played at the celebration will reflect the Quaker peace tradition.”

Historical Quaker figures like anti-slavery campaigners Benjamin and Sarah Lay and noted horticulturist Henry Doubleday, who all hailed from near Sudbury, will also be commemorated.

It's a day of remembrance, fun, music, dance and camaraderie, and an occasion to learn more about Sudbury's Quaker community, and their continued effort to make the world a better place to live in.
