A new food van serving the "ultimate cheesy chips" sold out within two hours of opening in a a village.

Smother Spudders, a new food van that sells a range of loaded cheesy chips, arrived at the Steeple Stores in Steeple Bumpstead, near Haverhill, on Thursday.

Geoff and Jo Platt, from Essex, serve a range of smothered potato dishes, all completely gluten-free, including chicken tikka masala fries, cheeseburger fries, Mexican fries, and vegan Korean fries with kimchi and green chilli mayo.

Customers can also order dairy-free cheese from the van, which has lovingly been named Gina after its glowing Orangina-like colour.

Mr Platt, who started the business just five weeks ago, said: "It was absolutely phenomenal, we couldn't have asked for a better night. We opened at 5pm and were greeted by queues of people. We sold out of literally everything by 7pm."

He added: "People were coming from all over the place to try our spuds."

Mr Platt says he has been a chef for more than 40 years and has previously served the late Queen Elizabeth II and the now King Charles during his time in the Royal Navy.

The Essex dad also says also says he has worked with celebrity chefs such as Antony Worrall Thompson and Marcus Wareing.

He and his wife are both massive cheesy chip lovers and they saw a gap in the market, with the much-loved decadent dish being underused as a main dish. 

He said: "I love cheesy chips! However, I always get really disappointed when I order them. The chips at the bottom are always forgotten and they don't have that delicious tang.  So, that's where the idea of smothered chips came from.

"Every single one of our chips is coated in our signature sauce and the toppings are distributed in a way that gives a different and delightful sensation. This is different to loaded fries, it's the ultimate cheesy chips experience."

He added: "We have also noticed that a lot of these kind of dishes are not accessible to people with allergies, So we've been working with suppliers to make ensure all our food van is completely gluten-free. Plus, customers can also order dairy-free cheese and vegan products at their preference."

Smother Spudders said it has been invited to return to Steeple Bumpstead on Thursday, July 25 and will be serving up spuds every fortnight from now on.
