Residents will have the chance to give their views next week about plans to regenerate a Suffolk market town.

An engagement event will be held at Leiston Community Centre in Sizewell Road on Wednesday (July 24) to give people the opportunity to have their say about plans to develop the town's Market Square.

The area was included as part of the town's masterplan, or framework to inform and better coordinate wider regeneration activities in Leiston.

In the masterplan, Market Square is described as 'one of the pivotal sites for regeneration activities in Leiston town centre'.

Proposals for the area include a mix of uses, such as business properties, start-ups, housing aimed at younger and older age groups, a cafe and a new building for the town council and library.

There would also be a small-scale pedestrian public space, which would be easily visible and accessible from Sizewell Road.

The public space would also be made pedestrian and cycle-friendly with limited vehicle movements, except for residents, emergencies and service access from the south.

Existing pedestrian links with surrounding streets will be enhanced, while the residential development could include terraces, town houses, apartments and live/work units with studio and workshop spaces.

Car parking areas could be provided for existing residents, while public car parking will be retained and reconfigured, incorporating landscape enhancements.

The masterplan said: "The proposals for the Market Square site could provide a vibrant and distinctive additional street and space in the town centre, which complements rather than competes with the existing High Street and reinforces the unique character of the town."

The engagement event will be taking place from 11.30am to 1.30pm and then from 4pm to 6pm.
