A primary school where special needs pupils get "carefully tailored extra help" and pupils learn an "ambitious" curriculum has retained its 'good' Ofsted rating.

Kennett Primary School in Station Road was visited by the education watchdog on March 27 and inspectors found it remains a 'good' school.

Part of the Staploe Education Trust, and with 105 pupils aged three to 11, the school was described as a place where pupils "enjoy their time" and "thrive."

Inspectors said pupils know their teachers expect them to do their best, achieve well and produce work of a high standard.

They found behaviour is good and pupils feel safe.

A report following the visit said: "The school has carefully considered how best to organise learning to secure progress as pupils move through the school in mixed-age classes. The curriculum is ambitious."

It stated that occasionally some pupils "do not get the same opportunities to deepen their knowledge before moving on to new learning" which means some have weaker understanding and achieve less well but, over time, most pupils make strong progress and achieve well.

Pupils with special educational needs and disabilities were said to "get carefully tailored extra help" and teachers were said to "provide skilful support" including extra resources and task adjustments.

Inspectors said the school has a "carefully considered" approach to teaching reading.

They said: "In some lessons, adults teach new vocabulary precisely, but this is not consistent. A few pupils do not understand all of the words that they can read and cannot then use these words effectively in their writing."

The school was praised for its wide range of extra-curricular activities including trips to museums, outdoor adventure centres and the nearby pony academy.

To improve, inspectors said some pupils "do not get sufficient opportunities to apply new learning in depth" and so the school should ensure that teachers "consistently provide all pupils with tasks that enable them to practise, secure and deepen their knowledge".

They also said the school should "ensure that all adults have the expertise to teach new words clearly" so that pupils can use them confidently.

They deemed Kennett Primary School continues to be a 'good' school.

Ofsted originally judged the school to be good in October 2014 during a graded inspection, and this is the second ungraded inspection since then.
