A court hearing for a north Essex pensioner accused of being involved in a crash in a supermarket car park following which a woman died has been adjourned to allow a psychiatric report to be obtained on him.
Eighty-nine-year-old Colin Kirby-Green, of East End Green, Brightlingsea, is accused of failing to stop after a car collision, failing to report a collision and driving on a road with eyesight which did not comply with requirements.
The charges follow an incident in at Waitrose car park in St Andrews Gardens in Colchester last August.
Kirby-Green had been driving a Kia Venga when he hit 85-year-old Patricia Jepson.
Following the incident last August, emergency services treated Ms Jepson whilst a section of the supermarket car park was cordoned off.
Ms Jepson was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, for treatment for serious injuries but died nine days later.
A plea and trial preparation hearing was due to have taken place at Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday but the court was told that Kirby-Green was housebound and unable to attend.
The court heard a psychiatrist had found Kirby-Green was unfit to stand trial and Judge Emma Peters asked for a second report be prepared by another psychiatrist.
She adjourned the case until October 4 and said Kirby-Green should attend the hearing if possible.
