An investigation is underway after a light aircraft overran the runway at a mid Suffolk airfield in another plane incident in the region.

The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an inquiry into the incident at Elmsett Airfield, near Hadleigh, on Monday.

The incident unfolded as emergency services were called to the scene at the site in Whatfield Road at about 2.30pm.

According to the AAIB, a light aircraft overran the runway and crashed.

Both occupants inside the plane were uninjured.

An AAIB spokesman said: "We have been informed a light aircraft overran the end of the runway while landing. Both occupants were uninjured.

"The AAIB will not be deploying a team to the site but will make further inquiries to facilitate our investigation."

Five appliances from Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to the crash, with officers from Suffolk police also at the scene.

It is the latest aircraft crash to take place in the region in recent years.

A Grumman FM2 Wildcat overturned in a crash at Heveningham Hall in July 2023.

Investigators at the AAIB, which investigates civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents in the UK, established the aircraft's landing gear "dug into" a softer sub-soil after touching down before flipping over forwards and ending upside down.

A rapid deceleration, combined with the mass of the engine, which was no longer producing thrust, caused the aircraft to flip over.

The authority is also investigating an aircraft crash which took place at the same venue, near Halesworth, earlier this summer.

Two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries after a crash involving a Jodel D18 light aircraft in that incident.

It is currently being investigated by the AAIB.

And another aircraft crash took place close to the Suffolk-Essex border in Pebmarsh, near Halstead, in August last year.

A pilot, a man in his 70s and the sole occupant of the Piper PA-28-180 aircraft, died at the scene.
