Repair work will be undertaken on several roads surrounding a road which collapsed at the end of last year.

Following requests from the community in Aldham and Elmsett, Suffolk Highways has announced they will carry out additional construction on routes around The Street in Aldham, which collapsed in November last year.

The works will commence on Thursday, August 22 and will be completed under a TO15 arrangement. This means when a vehicle arrives at the obstruction, the work promoter will aim to provide access within 15 minutes.

Priory Road and Whatfield Road are among the local roads which will be repaired.

It comes amid the news that the authority has provisionally secured a piling contractor for works to start on Aldham's The Street in September.

Work was delayed again in July after the discovery of birds nesting in the banks near to where the carriageway collapsed.

An update from Suffolk Highways on Wednesday said: "Last week, ecologists confirmed that the small areas of scrub land which needed to be cleared to support a revised retaining structure was currently clear of wildlife.

"Suffolk Highways therefore attended site with the ecologist and cleared this area from vegetation ahead of the installation of the retaining structure. Works were also undertaken in the field margin and road edge to locate the depth of the Anglian Water main which was required for the second phase of our works."

Bosses revealed in January the work is set to total more than six figures.

"It's six figures," said Suffolk County Councillor Paul West. "Just thinking about how much things cost.

"When I understood that I thought 'that's a lot', but when you work out what things cost these days you can quite easily get into six figures when you start looking at the work that needs to be done to make things safe."
