A mum and daughter duo are celebrating a "very surreal" occasion as they both graduate from health courses at the University of Suffolk on the same day.

Yve Carter graduated with a BSc in Adult Nursing on Monday morning before her mum Rebecca donned her gown to receive her FdA Health and Wellbeing (Assistant Practitioner) degree apprenticeship award in the afternoon.

Yve, who earlier this month started a job at James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston as a staff nurse in the Sandra Chapman Centre said: "It feels strange as this isn’t something that happens very often but I am happy to experience it with her."

Mum Rebecca added that it was "very surreal", but it almost didn't happen.

Her course was due to be a two year programme, but due to her taking a break in learning due to personal issues at the end of the first year, she completed her course at the same time as her daughter, who did a three year course.

Yve said: "My mum is a lot more academic than me, so she did definitely help me with everything she could, but I can’t say I was any help to her with regards to the academic side of things.

"In terms of general support, we both helped each other - it was nice to have her there going through something similar.

"The whole process was great – meeting new people, progressing and growing throughout the three years were the best parts."

Rebecca said: "It’s quite a broad degree, it covers a lot of stuff so you can branch off to all different areas.

"I couldn’t believe I did it, that’s a real achievement for me, and to be celebrating my daughter graduating too."
