This is too late but l had to add my memories of Mr Lettin. He was my surgeon at Bart’s in the late seventies and gave a very frightened arthritic 17 year old her life back. Terrifying but kind he replaced my hips and knees with a warning they would last 15years. They lasted for 40! He once decided to put me on a diet so l quipped bread and water? I wasn’t thinking about the bread was the reply! From the bottom of my heart l wish l could tell him how brilliant he was. Thank you Mr Lettin and I’m sure there are many like me who you gave a chance of a normal life. God Bless You

I am deeply saddened to read that Alan Lettin has passed away. He was the first Consultant I worked for aged 18 at Barts. He was a lovely man to work for, at times demanding but always interesting. He introduced me to the Society of Barber Surgeons and we had many lively political discussions. He also hosted great parties! Forty years on I still remember him and smile. Rest in peace.

'Fred' was an inspiration to me when I trained in orthopaedics at Barts in the 70's.
He was larger than life and will live on in all our memories.
