A former 1920s playhouse and cinema which was previously home to the Bury St Edmunds Argos has become the subject of another planning application to turn it into housing.

Originally constructed in 1925 as the Playhouse Theatre and Cinema, 29 Buttermarket came into retail use in the late 1950s.

The two-storey section on the Buttermarket will remain as Cambridge Building Society, whilst the three-storey element on High Baxter Street which was formerly home to Argos could be converted into housing.

In 2019, West Suffolk Council granted permission to turn the site into four apartments, but the three-year time limit to begin development passed in March 2022.

Now, plans have been submitted to create five dwellings - one one-bedroom unit, three three-bedroom flats and one four-bedroom home.

Set within the medieval grid of Bury St Edmunds town centre, designers say the proposals will "develop a more lively and inclusive building to the street".

The planning statement adds that they aim to "create visually a new building in the street scene" while retaining some of the existing elements.
