Sizewell C offers well-paid, long-term careers that are vital for delivering the low-carbon energy needed to tackle the climate crisis.
Sizewell C is the new nuclear power station planned for Suffolk which will supply around six million homes with low carbon electricity for at least 60 years.
Together, Sizewell C alongside sister project Hinkley Point C and the operating power station Sizewell B will provide low carbon electricity to help the UK reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and help protect the planet while meeting net zero targets.
Once the station is operational the nuclear licensed area will cover 69 hectares out of the 800 hectares we are responsible for – the rest of the estate will be left for nature. The Sizewell team is working with Wild East to make the best use of the land for nature.
A stand at the Suffolk Show will showcase the important role Sizewell C will have in tackling climate change and demonstrate the breadth of jobs available – from intern placements through to apprenticeships and full-time work. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with some of those already working on the project, from apprentices through to archaeologists!
Nuclear offers long-term, wellpaid careers which require a diverse set of skills and disciplines including roles such as ecologists, project managers, chefs, construction supervisors, earthworks operatives and plant operations.
And these careers will last long beyond construction. When complete, Sizewell C will have an expected workforce of 900 people to run the power station through its 60-year operation, working in areas such as logistics, engineering, administration, IT, finance, catering, hospitality and much more.
Sizewell C also offers the perfect place to launch a career in the energy sector. If you are aged between 16 and 21 and living in Suffolk, Norfolk or Essex, you can sign up for the Young Sizewell C programme, which helps connect young people to in-demand career and apprenticeship opportunities in the region.
Sizewell C aims to recruit 1,500 apprentices in total. The project has already funded more than 20 apprenticeships and 50 work placements and committed £385,000 as part of the Apprentice Levy transfer scheme, which sees other local firms benefitting from funding.
Ben Heath is on an industrial placement with the Regional and External Affairs team based in Leiston.
“This placement has been an amazing experience and one that I will always cherish,” he said. “From day one I have been given the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that benefit the company and strengthen my educational and professional development. I feel it has helped prepare me for a successful career within the energy industry.”
Agreements are in place between Sizewell C and all further education colleges in Suffolk, including the University of Suffolk, East Coast College, Suffolk New College and West Suffolk College.
“Some apprentices from Suffolk have already started their journey with us by joining colleagues in Hinkley Point C to learn their craft before returning to us to work on Sizewell C at a higher level,” said managing director Julia Pyke.
“They are learning skills which will help them when we switch on Hinkley Point C,” says Julia. “That is one of the many great things about this industry: you can move around and gain experience and share knowledge.”
The company is also committed to building a workforce thatunderstands, respects and embraces diversity, where everyone is treated with equal respect and given access to opportunities. Its charter champions inclusivity, with clear targets on issues such as gender balance, race equality, LGBTQ+ pride and support for disabilities, carers, parents and mental health.
“By working at Sizewell C, you will be taking part in one of the biggest net zero projects in the UK and making your own contribution to fighting climate change,” said managing director Nigel Cann.
“Whatever your interest, we are sure there will be a role to suit you with the project and where you start doesn’t determine your long-term future with us – progress and opportunities are yours for the taking.”
