Capacity at a Suffolk prison is set to increase this week as part of a rapid deployment cell scheme.
A further 160 new modular prison cells are due to open at HMP Hollesley Bay in Hollesley, near Woodbridge.
The rollout of more than 1,000 cells at 18 prisons across the country is part of the rising demand for spaces.
Prisons minister Damian Hinds said: "The government will stop at nothing to ensure we have enough prison cells to take dangerous criminals off the streets.
"These measures to create a further 1,900 places are providing extra capacity to deal with immediate pressures stemming from the pandemic and its impact on the justice system."

The new rapid deployment cells have a lifespan of about 15 years, the government has said.
As a result of the extra space, it is hoped the cells will allow for smooth running of prisons by giving governors more choice in how they manage inmates day-to-day.
