Suffolk is known for its picturesque towns and villages but is there any more stunning than East Bergholt?

East Bergholt is a village in the Stour Valley and is best known for being the birthplace of painter John Constable.

Here are just some of the reasons why the village is worth visiting.

Countryside

East Bergholt is well-known for its glorious countryside setting. 

Nestled close to the Dedham Vale the village is one of the largest in the Stour Valley.

With a variety of elegant houses, many of which date back to the 13th century, the village is a beautiful place to visit all year round. 

There are a number of great walks around the village ranging from one hour to three hours. 

East Bergholt was also named one of the best place to live in the UK.

Great independent businesses 

East Bergholt is full of independent businesses. 

One of the most popular is Oranges & Lemons cafe. In 2023 the business was awarded a prestigious national award. 

Open between Tuesday and Saturday, the café has several different menus, serving everything from fish and chips to a range of paninis.

There is also a great independent ladies' boutique clothing shop in the village. 

Sarah Jane's Boutique sells a range of clothing, bags and accessories and is located in the heart of the village. 

Good pubs and great food 

East Bergholt is lucky when it comes to great places for a bit of food and drink. 

Home to four pubs, the Lion Brasserie, Carriers Arms, Hare & Hounds and the Royal Oak there is something for everyone in the village. 

The Lion Brasserie was voted as one of the pubs of the year in 2023.

It also has five luxury guest rooms. 

Great sports facilities

East Bergholt is a great place for sports lovers with a number of great sports facilities. 

 The village is home to a cricket, football and tennis team. 

During the summer months, East Bergholt Cricket Club can be found playing their home games at their ground on Gandish Road.
