A bakery chain which originated in a Suffolk coastal town has won the award for best cake in Britain. 

The inaugural Britain's Best Cake awards were held on Monday, April 29 at the UK Food and Drink Show in Birmingham. 

The awards found the best cakes across a series of categories including brownie, classic cake and free-from cake. 

Two Magpies, founded in Southwold in 2012, took home many awards, including Britain's best cake for its salted caramel and almond brownie.

It is described as a dark single origin Madagascan chocolate brownie with buttered almonds and salted caramel.

One of the judges said: "The roasted nuts really cut through the richness. Having that crunchy nut on top really balanced it out."

The brownie was also crowned winner in the brownie category and Two Magpies' Allpress tiramisu cake received highly commended in the free-from cake category.

Another Suffolk bakery also took home a top award. 

Little Barn Cakes, in Stoke-by-Nayland, won best occasion cake for its garden party cake. 

Last year the business took home another a bronze award for a life-size Shetland pony cake at Cake International.
