There were delays of more than 60 minutes and six miles of congestion following a crash on the A12.
Officers were called to the two-vehicle collision on the southbound carriageway near Colchester on Saturday afternoon.
A spokesman for National Highways said traffic was being held between junction 25 for Marks Tey and junction 26 for Colchester.
Delays have since cleared.
