Competitors made a splash when the Needham Market Raft Race returned for the 21st time.
The event took place on Sunday, June 9 at Needham Lakes and, inspired by the circus theme, competitors dressed as clowns and circus animals for the event.
Jean Pittaway, chairman of Needham Market Raft Race Committee, believed the tricky conditions at this year's event would make it an open race in which even newcomers could spring a surprise.
Competition was fierce for raft race glory, with team “Under The Thumb” bidding to defend its title from challengers including Team Everyone Active Stowmarket making its third appearance at the event.
A new charity fundraiser trophy was up for grabs this year to recognise the work of the raft teams in raising money for their chosen charities.
Needham Lake was packed with stalls and markets for the event.
"This is absolutely fun," said Claire Williams, who visits the event regularly.
She added: "I wish it could be like this every day. You see everyone young and old come here and take part."
The event kicked off with a best-dressed competition and the judging of the fancy dress costumes worn by competitors before the race started at 2pm.
Many competitors, still in fancy dress, chose to race on decorated rafts, adding to the colourful and, at times, funny spectacle as they paddled down river.
