A village primary school in the heart of rural Suffolk had a visit from Ipswich Town to help celebrate its 150th birthday.

This week, Kersey Church of England Primary School has turned 150, having first opened its doors to the community in 1874.

In honour of the occasion, the school has laid out a whole week’s worth of fun events to help staff and students celebrate.

On Monday, the students could barely contain their excitement for a visit from staff and coaches at Ipswich Town.

Support for the Blues has been overflowing, after their historic promotion to the Premier League in May.

Coaches from the team arrived in the playground on Monday morning, with the children taking part in two activities.

First, they showed off their goal scoring skills, kicking a Velcro football onto a huge, inflatable dartboard. Next, it was time to practice their hoop-shooting, again aiming the ball towards an enormous inflatable with three targets.

In the afternoon, the children welcomed Bishop Martin Seeley for a special church service. Later in the week, they will enjoy an afternoon alumni tea complete with a brass concert and maypole dancing, a tree planting session with the Woodland Trust, and a poetry competition.

Jess Damant is one of the headteachers at Kersey. She said it had been a pleasure to see how kind and encouraging the students were, as they soaked up the knowledge and tips being imparted to them by the Blues.

“We are thrilled and honoured to be celebrating this incredible 150-year milestone,” she said. “To be a part of Kersey Church of England Primary School, journeying with the children is a privilege.

“It is a milestone all the children and staff are incredibly proud to be a part of.”
