A west Suffolk building society branch has been closed temporarily to undergo a revamp. 

Nationwide in Newmarket's High Street will be closed to the public until Monday, August 5 while a refurbishment is carried out. 

It comes after the branch was broken into late last year where the cash machine was stolen during a ram raid. 

Officers were called to the Nationwide building at about 4.50am on Monday, December 4. 

On arrival, police found the ATM had been stolen during the raid.

A police cordon was put in place while officers carried out investigations. 

A JCB telehandler was used to smash into the wall of the building society and remove the cash machine, parts of which were later loaded into a Luton van. 

The van then made off in convoy with a white Mercedes A Class towards Cambridgeshire, with the JCB left behind in High Street.

A spokesman for Suffolk police said officers believe four suspects were involved and were all dressed in dark-coloured clothing and were wearing balaclavas. 

The branch reopened on Wednesday, January 31.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
