Plans to convert a snooker hall into flats have been refused. 

Proposals seeking to convert the first floor of Sudbury Snooker Club at 50-51 North Street were submitted to Babergh District Council in June of this year. 

The documents said the planned flats would comprise of two three-bedroom homes and two two-bedroom homes.

Louise Milton, who runs the snooker club, said the landlord did not formally tell her about the plans before they were submitted. 

"I have had comments saying 'are you closing' and 'are you going to be flats soon', but it was a shock to us too and I am just flabbergasted," she said.

More than 100 public objections were lodged against the plans on the planning portal with concerns raised including the impact on the several groups that use the site for meetings. 

Issues with parking, loss of amenity, overdevelopment and loss of employment were also raised.

On Friday, July 12 Babergh District Council refused the plans to convert the first floor into flats. 

The decision notice said the rejection was due to the function room of the property falling under a different class outside of the scope of the submitted application.
