In a bid to honour its literary legacy, a historic Suffolk house has been given a timeless renovation by a renowned interior architect and homeowner, Katerina Turner.
The Old School House in Bury St Edmunds, famed for having inspired Peter Pan author J M Barrie, has been transformed into a showcase of Ms Turner's aesthetic prowess.
Each room features a unique design that blends seamlessly with the rest of the property.
The house functioned as a school till 1946, during which its headmistress became acquainted with Barrie.
It was the school’s five-acre garden, particularly a twisted Scots Pine which captured his fascination and eventually became the inspiration for 'The Lost Boys' hideout' in his acclaimed children's classic.
Ms Turner has creatively reimagined the home, bringing it back to life from her ink and pen drawings.
Ms Turner said: “I created a narrative for myself that we had just inherited this home, and should respect its history and stories.
“So that meant we avoided the ‘shiny and new’ where possible, and instead integrated a lot of vintage and antique second-hand fittings and furniture.”
Boasting a perfect mix of history and modernity, the renovated property retains the charm of vintage with its antique fittings, while the masterful touch of warm wallpapers and furnishings offers a contemporary feel.
Though respectful of past times, Ms Turner insists on the house's readiness for the future.
She said: “I believe this juxtaposition between the old and new doesn’t jar – but in fact is very harmonious.”
She had previously garnered media attention with her ‘Fragmented Memories, Shattered Reflections’ art exhibition, created in aid of Ukrainian refugees.
Elements from this exhibition now mark various sections of The Old School House.
The Old School House is currently on the market and is being promoted by Fine & Country.
