The landlord of a "picture perfect" village pub has spoken of his surprise there has not been more interest in taking it over nine months after it went on the market.

Charles Rogers, who runs the Dog at Grundisburgh with his wife Eilir, said there had been "a little bit of interest" and "enquiries, but nothing has really been that serious" since the 150-year-old pub went up for sale through property specialist Fleurets in November.

Since the property went on the market, the guide price for the property has been reduced from £70,000 to £39,500 for a new free-of-tie lease.

Mr Rogers said: "We have had a little bit of interest, but it is a cracking pub in one of the nicest villages around Woodbridge and Suffolk.

"It is a picture perfect country pub waiting for someone to take the reins over from us."

The couple have run the pub for the last 14 years, but now want to focus their attention on a delicatessen they run, as well as The Woodyard pizzeria they run in Tide Mill Way, Woodbridge.

The Dog at Grundisburgh has been on the market since NovemberThe Dog at Grundisburgh has been on the market since November (Image: Newsquest) In July, this newspaper revealed that Mrs Rogers was planning to move the Grundisburgh Dog Delicatessen she runs in The Street to a new location in Market Hill in Woodbridge, where it will be known as Essen and offer fine food, including charcuterie and cheese boards.

Mr Rogers believed the apparent lack of interest may be linked to "bad press" about the pub industry, as many venues had struggled during the cost-of-living crisis with rising energy prices and households tightening their belts by reducing eating out.

However, he said: "This pub seems to be one that has always done well through thick and thin. It is in a really good area with really good support."

The pub has received a number of awards, including Best Pub in Suffolk and the UK's most dog-friendly pub and benefits from passing trade and customers from the village.

Mr Rogers added: "It is a lovely pub. It is a picture perfect village pub overlooking the green. It is a great location.

"A nice pub and setting only a few minutes from Woodbridge and Ipswich. 

"It is more of a destination food pub plus lots of local support as well. It is a busy pub. We are still doing very well."

He added that the couple will continue to run the pub until a new landlord is found.
