Drivers were facing long delays on the A12 following a crash.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the incident in the northbound carriageway near Witham on Friday afternoon.
According to National Highways there were delays of six miles going northbound and four going southbound.
Essex Police, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and the East of England Ambulance Service were all at the scene.
The extent of any injuries and the number of vehicles involved is not yet known.
The incident was affecting traffic heading towards Suffolk.
