A west Suffolk town is celebrating after it received gold in a prestigious horticultural award.

Brandon was presented with a gold award and declared best overall in the Medium Town category at the Anglia in Bloom ceremony on September 6.

The town also received a special award for the 'Best Display Celebrating 60 Years of Britain in Bloom' for The Wedge on Thetford Road.

Meanwhile, Brandon in Bloom’s ‘Tea Party’ display at The Friendly Bench on Bury Road, was handed a silver 60th anniversary award.

Three other areas of the town were also nominated for special awards - the Friendly Bench in the Best Grow Your Own Project category, Kings Garden in the Best Sustainable Planting category and Brandon High Street in the Best Conservation/ Biodiversity category.

Rachel Sobiechowski, Brandon in Bloom’s head of horticulture, said: “I am extremely proud of our volunteers for their efforts in this year’s campaign, every year it’s harder to not only maintain the standards we have achieved but to keep improving is testament to their determination to do their best for our town.

“My thanks to Brandon town staff for all of their efforts in the campaign, and to West Suffolk council for their ongoing support.

“Finally, a big thank you to all of our sponsors. Without their financial support we would be unable to create award winning displays.”

Nearby Bury St Edmunds also bagged gold in the Large Town category of the awards, which form part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Britain in Bloom competition.

Several other places in the west Suffolk town also received accolades in the awards, including Wedgwood House, which won overall winner of Best Inclusivity Garden, and Abbey Gardens, which took gold in the Public Parks category.
