A Suffolk pub landlord has spoken of his concern for his business and others in the area ahead of the Labour government's first Budget.

Rachel Reeves, Chancellor of the Exchequer, will deliver her first Budget today  and reports suggest it could include a raise of the national minimum wage and higher national insurance contributions for employers.

Chris Theobald, landlord of the Parrot and Punchbowl pub in Aldringham and The Dolphin at Thorpeness, said he fears these rises could mark the end for some small businesses.

"Any extra costs that the budget brings us could tip many businesses over the line that is going to make them not exist anymore, unfortunately," said Mr Theobald.

"It is going to affect lots of people I think, lots of small businesses. It is worrying times for a lot of us."

On Tuesday it was revealed that minimum wage will rise to £12.21 an hour next year after the Chancellor confirmed a 6.7% increase ahead of Wednesday's Budget.

The Chancellor described the move as a "significant step" towards delivering on Labour's manifesto promise to introduce a "genuine living wage for working people".

The Chancellor is expected to increase employer contributions to national insurance by at least one percentage point as the government seeks to raise funds without hiking taxes on "working people", an election manifesto promise.
