A consultation has begun on a scheme to encourage walking and cycling in a Suffolk seaside town.

Suffolk County Council is seeking views on the plans for Maidstone Road, Grange Road and Ferry Lane, which aim to make it easier for walkers and cyclists, particularly families and children attending two local primary schools - SET Felix and Grange Community School.

Measures will include the widening of a footpath on the west side of Maidstone Road to a width of three metres to enable walkers and cyclists to share the space.

Traffic calming will also be introduced to slow down vehicles turning into Maidstone Road from the southern end, while there will be pavement widening and a rise in the height of the extended speed hump (or table) outside SET Felix School to slow down traffic.

In Grange Road, pavements will be widened to create shared use for pedestrians and cyclists, while the junction at the Grange Farm Avenue roundabout will be narrowed to reduce the distance needed to cross.

Meanwhile, a larger raised table will be installed outside Grange Community School, while the pavement will be widened.

The roundabout at the junction of Grange Road and Mill Lane is also set to be converted to a T-junction to make it easier and safer for walkers and cyclists to cross the road.

In Ferry Lane, there will be pavement widening at the junction with Chelsworth Road and a parallel crossing will be created enabling walkers and cyclists to cross.

The proposals are part of an Active Travel scheme and the county council has received £7.9m funding for similar schemes around the county, while the £1.3m funding for the Felixstowe scheme was announced in March 2023.

On the scheme's consultation page, the council said: "Our vision is to make the neighbourhoods around Maidstone Road, Grange Road and Ferry Lane safer and easier to walk and cycle, particularly for those children and families who go to the two local primary schools.

"We want to hear from the community on what the challenges are and which solutions you think would make the biggest difference to you."

The consultation is being conducted online, although there will be an in-person event at Felixstowe Methodist Church on Wednesday, November 20 between 2.30pm and 6.45pm.
