Ipswich Town: Sam Morsy reacts as Blues beat Coventry City 2-1

The Blues took the lead through Kieffer Moore, who fired Wes Burns’ low cross into the back of the net. The hosts responded well and equalised through Haji Wright after the break, but Cameron Burgess popped up with a crucial goal in the 69th minute to seal all three points for Town.

“We started the game really well and scored a really good goal,” Morsy said after the game. “We cut through them a few times, but they had spells of the ball which isn’t uncommon when a team has nothing to play for and they have good players.

“They’re at home, and obviously they want to play their game as well, so we had to be resilient.

“Then they equalised – a half-decent strike, maybe we could do better. It sort of went through, which can happen, it’s a good strike.

“Then we get back in the game, had lots of chances and showed resilience as well. Maybe we could’ve scored one or two more, but we’ll take the win.”

A fast start was crucial for Ipswich, and Moore obviously delivered. Banishing any early nerves was crucial, and the Wales international showed that he was ice-cool in front of goal to put his side ahead.

“It’s about trying to get control of the game, and I think we did that well, to be fair,” Morsy argued.

“When we got through one or two passes, we looked really, really dangerous. We scored a really big goal - the big man came up with a really big goal today.”

Ultimately, it was Burgess’ goal that will go down in history as the winner, and Morsy knows just how big it could be for his team.

“He showed real, big determination, and that’s what we need to force the ball in,” the midfielder explained. “Jezza had a couple of opportunities, Omari did as well. It was a really, really positive performance.”

Crucially, they managed to hold on deep into added time, which ended up being more than 11 minutes due to injuries and an issue with the referee’s equipment.

But there was no repeat of the shock defeat to Cardiff City. Town showed their professionalism to grind out the win in a nerve-racking clash.

“That’s one game in a few years,” Morsy said of the aforementioned clash in South Wales. “Every game is different, every game can be random and every team in the division has a threat. Teams can score at any moment, but we had to be strong, we had to be resilient.

“We did what we did and we dug it out.”

Fans stayed behind after the game to celebrate with the players, singing their hearts out after a pivotal night in the Midlands. They’ve had plenty over the last two years, but this may top the lot.

“It was really nice,” Morsy admitted. “We had a really big following, the fans were amazing and they carried us through to the end.

“I heard them in massive voice and it was a great evening for them.”

The job from this point is crystal clear. If Ipswich can avoid defeat at home to Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon, they’ll guarantee successive promotions and a place in next season’s Premier League. Of course, Morsy has full belief that they can do it.

“We’ve got belief that we can win every game,” the 32-year-old stated. “We’ll go out, try and win it and run ourselves into the ground.

“We’ll approach the game with humility, give it everything we’ve got. At 90 plus minutes, we’ll see wherever we are.”
