Huddersfield Town manager Andre Breitenreiter has revealed that he'll start back-up goalkeeper Chris Maxwell against Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.
Maxwell, 33, has extensive Championship experience, having played numerous games at the level for both Preston North End and Blackpool.
However, he's been sat behind first-choice shot-stopper Lee Nicholls in the pecking order this season, limiting him to just eight league appearances, most recently playing in a 3-0 win against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day where he was substituted in the first half through injury.
He returned to the squad in February, around a week before Breitenreiter was appointed, but is yet to feature under the German, who's since admitted that he'll make the change at Portman Road this weekend.
"For Saturday, one change I can tell you," he said in his pre-match press conference. "We will change the goalkeeper, because Chris Maxwell deserves to start one game when I’m in charge because he was professional the whole time.
"He is absolutely clear and he's had Lee there the whole season, so he deserves to play in the last game.
“We spoke today to Lee and to Max and both are fine. This is one change that’s nothing to do with the behaviour because Lee is absolutely a good character.”
Breitenreiter said that his side's fate was sealed after their 1-1 draw against Birmingham City, explaining that their hopes of avoiding relegation are 'over now' and that scoring 15 times to swing the goal the goal difference is 'not really realistic'.
However, he reaffirmed that his side will do their best to get a positive result in Suffolk, even if it ends up helping local rivals Leeds United, as Ipswich need a point to secure promotion to the Premier League.
"I understand that our supporters don't like the neighbouring club," he added. "In Germany, it's not allowed to say the name of the neighbours, so when we have the derby, I understand this.
"But we are all professionals and it's our task and our job to do the best every time. Many players maybe want to show their best performance, to show our responsible people that they're the right person for next people or to shine for a new task at another club.
"I'm sure that everyone will try to give their best, and if it means that we finish the season with a good result, the fans also deserve it that we try to give our best."
