Ipswich Town Women manager Joe Sheehan said he was "delighted" with his side’s performance and season-opening victory over Oxford United.

Town Women ran riot in Oxfordshire this afternoon as they won 3-0 thanks to goals through Lucy O'Brien, who converted from the penalty spot, and Sophie Peskett who bagged a brace.

Sheehan said: "I thought we started really well. Our attitude was spot on.

"I think we tried to take the game on and take the initiative early.

"This is a place that is really difficult to come to, it isn't the easiest place to perform or win at, and we really took the game on with a brave attitude.

"We caused them a lot of problems. A little fortunate with the first goal but I thought we were forcing a lot down that right side.

"The third goal was really good, and we will take a lot of confidence from this.

"With all things considered, not playing well during pre-season, having injuries which dented our depth a little, to come here and put on a performance like that, I think we can be really delighted."

Match report: Oxford United 0-3 Ipswich Town Women

Town have made seven signings so far this summer, with five of them making their debuts for Town today.

Sheehan said: "I thought Nat (Negri) was brilliant. She pulled off brilliant saves all pre-season and to act as late as she did from a deflection when it was 1-0 to us, that was an important moment.

"I think Shauna (Guyatt) and Angela (Addison) were brilliant, their energy and their willingness to work just as hard without the ball was tremendous in midfield.

"Issy (Fisher) came on and made a real impact from the bench.

"I think it's going to be a really exciting season and once they find a good flow of games, I think we can get more out of them as well."
